Sweden is moving toward establishing domestic maintenance capabilities for its next-generation frigates after Naval Group signed a cooperation agreement with Oresund Drydocks AB.

The partnership will see Naval Group and Oresund Drydocks jointly provide maintenance and in-service support for the Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) program, with initial delivery to Sweden anticipated around 2030.

The agreement emphasizes life-cycle support, knowledge transfer, and sustained fleet readiness, while contributing to the growth of Sweden’s defense industry. According to Guillaume Weisrock, Naval Group’s Vice President for Sales and Business Development for Europe and North America, the collaboration aims to drive innovation, create skilled jobs, and enhance Sweden’s strategic autonomy in managing its FDI vessels.

Through the initiative, Naval Group intends to transfer advanced maritime technologies and expertise to Swedish partners, strengthening both operational effectiveness and industrial sustainability.

Over the past two years, Naval Group has pursued similar localization strategies internationally. In 2025, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Westcon Naval Shipyard in Norway to build a national frigate support framework.

In late 2024, the company expanded engagement with Greek industry and the University of Patras to advance research, technology cooperation, and long-term frigate sustainment planning.

Beyond Europe, Naval Group has continued to deepen its industrial involvement in Saudi Arabia via its subsidiary Naval Group Arabia in Riyadh, supporting local industry participation, technology transfer, and sustainment activities aligned with Vision 2030 defense sector goals.
