The Swedish government has committed over $900 million toward enhancing its air defense and anti-drone capabilities, marking a significant step in bolstering national and regional security. The investment will fund a mix of radar systems, air defense weapons, and electronic warfare solutions designed to counter evolving aerial threats.
Valued at 8.7 billion kronor ($916 million), the package constitutes a major portion of the air defense funding increase announced earlier this year. The government has already finalized agreements with leading defense firms, including Saab and BAE Systems Bofors, a subsidiary of the UK’s BAE Systems.
Initial deliveries are slated for 2027, a pace officials consider rapid given the current pressure on Europe’s defense manufacturing sector. At the same time, Sweden has underscored the importance of Europe assuming a larger share of defense responsibilities, while maintaining confidence in continued cooperation within allied frameworks.
