The Swedish government has committed 15 billion kronor ($1.6 billion) to enhance national air defenses, prioritizing the protection of civilian population centers and other high-value targets.
The investment will focus on expanding ground-based air defense capabilities, as European nations accelerate rearmament efforts in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and shifting US–NATO relations.
“Experience from Ukraine clearly shows the necessity of strong air defense systems,” the government said in its statement.
Sweden’s move follows comparable actions by other European countries, including Germany, whose parliament approved $59 billion in new defense funding in December.
The government added that the first procurement activities under the plan are expected to take place in the first quarter of 2026.
