Indra has been entrusted with a critical role in shaping the future of Spain’s armored forces through the development of a next-generation replacement for the Leopard 2E main battle tank.

The company was awarded a €45 million ($52.7 million) contract under the PAMOV program to deliver a new land combat vehicle featuring advanced propulsion systems, improved survivability, and enhanced firepower.

Madrid has emphasized requirements for superior situational awareness and high maneuverability to ensure operational effectiveness in modern battlefields.

Industry sources indicate that Indra is exploring a novel powertrain architecture and advanced network-enabled combat systems to improve battlefield integration and performance.

The new tank concept is expected to support seamless interoperability with allied forces and incorporate a scalable electronic architecture aimed at ensuring long-term relevance.

PAMOV underscores Spain’s drive to develop a “highly capable land combat system” and marks a second attempt to reinforce its armored forces following its absence from the Franco-German MGCS initiative.

Nevertheless, experts caution that the development of an entirely new main battle tank may present financial and technical challenges if pursued without international collaboration.

With a planned service horizon beyond 2040, Indra is likely to leverage experience gained from the Leopard 2E program, which successfully blended Spanish industrial participation with German technology.
