In a strategic move to tap into the European Commission’s €800-billion ($938.1 billion) rearmament program, South Korea has outlined three key defense collaboration proposals to Greece.

The package features submarine construction, manned-unmanned teaming drone technology, and combat vehicle co-production — each aligning with Greece’s NATO-driven modernization goals. Greek officials, citing national defense compatibility, said discussions will continue to determine potential agreements, as reported by Ekathimerini.

Submarine Construction & Fleet Overhaul
Hanwha Ocean has offered to help the Hellenic Navy develop new submarines and upgrade its Type 214 Papanikolis-class fleet, with 25% of production allocated to Greek facilities. The firm has already delivered three Type 214s to Greece and is advancing the KSS-III ballistic missile submarine program. Greece has requested specifics on co-production and modernization terms to bring the work to domestic shipyards.

Advanced MUM-T ‘Loyal Wingman’ Systems
Korea Aerospace Industries’ proposal involves producing MUM-T “Loyal Wingman” systems in Greece, enabling autonomous drones to operate alongside piloted fighters. Already in development for South Korea’s KF-21 Boramae, the system could be integrated into Hellenic Air Force operations with local manufacturing participation.

Combat Vehicle Co-Production
South Korea’s third offer focuses on replacing outdated Hellenic Army vehicles through joint production of modern combat platforms, enhancing ground force mobility while creating industrial opportunities in Greece.

EU Defense Funding Drive
The EU’s rearmament initiative, introduced in March by Ursula von der Leyen, seeks to expand investment in European defense industries, loosen fiscal restrictions, and speed up military deliveries to Ukraine as U.S. support faces uncertainty.
