Saab and Hanwha Aerospace have agreed to cooperate on a project to integrate the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) with the Chunmoo rocket artillery system under a new memorandum of understanding.
The partnership would significantly improve Chunmoo’s effectiveness by merging the long-range precision strike capabilities of the GLSDB with the system’s existing versatility and firepower. South Korea was the first operator of Chunmoo, with Poland, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE later acquiring it.
Chunmoo, based on an 8×8 Hanwha truck, employs two modular launch pods. These can be configured to fire 20 unguided 130mm rockets (36 km range), six 227mm unguided or 239mm guided rockets (up to 80 km range), or one 290mm tactical ballistic missile (290 km range).
The GLSDB extends engagement ranges to 150 kilometers (93 miles) by combining the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb with an M26 rocket motor, providing a cost-effective solution for precision ground-based strikes.
