Russia has initiated development of a new-generation multirole helicopter, intended to succeed its long-serving Mi-8/17 fleet, according to local media reports.

Tentatively named the Mi-80, the upcoming aircraft draws design inspiration from the Mi-171A3 and features modern enhancements, including upgraded rotor blades and high-performance engines tailored for contemporary airspace demands.

Cost-effective production is a key goal, with assembly expected to be handled by the original Mi-8/17 manufacturers—Kazan Helicopter Plant and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant.

According to multiple sources, the helicopter will have a maximum takeoff weight of 14 tons (28,000 pounds), a reinforced fuselage, and extensive use of polymer composite materials. It will also feature impact-resistant fuel tanks and a revised rotor layout to ensure improved safety, efficiency, and agility.

The program is currently in its technical specification phase, with financial hurdles delaying the start of full development. Once funding is secured, the project is projected to take around five years to complete.

The Russian Air Force currently operates over 700 Mi-8/17 helicopters, with more than 800 units deployed across other military branches and government agencies. Worldwide, nearly 3,000 of these Soviet-origin helicopters remain in active use.
