The Republic of Korea Navy has selected Rolls-Royce as its propulsion partner for the upcoming Ulsan-class frigates, outfitting the vessels with the British firm’s MT30 gas turbines and other essential propulsion equipment.

The comprehensive package will include diesel generator sets, electric propulsion support, and propeller control systems for integration into six next-generation frigates. These vessels are part of a larger $3B defense investment announced by Seoul in 2021.

Shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean will construct the first two ships, while STX-Engines will provide the electric motor systems. The diesel-powered electric motors will run during standard cruise, with the MT30 turbines reserved for higher-speed deployment.
