New Zealand Invests $1.16 Billion in Submarine-Hunting Helicopters

New Zealand has announced a US$1.16 billion purchase of five Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, strengthening its maritime defense capabilities.

The acquisition is part of a broader $1.57 billion (NZ$2.7 billion) package that also includes two Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The Seahawks will come equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes, Hellfire missiles, machine guns, and precision-guided weapon systems.

Officials confirmed plans to integrate drones into future defense operations.

This move marks a significant shift for a nation that has long prioritized peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, relying on aging aircraft and vessels prone to breakdowns. The new Airbus planes will replace the Air Force’s troubled 757s, with delivery expected by 2028.
