Nokia and Latvia’s Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) have entered into a strategic partnership to co-develop a 5G-enabled tactical communications system for defense applications across the Baltic region.
The collaboration merges Nokia’s advanced radio systems with LMT’s operational defense experience to deliver a secure, high-bandwidth, and resilient network optimized for battlefield environments. The system will facilitate real-time connectivity among sensors, autonomous vehicles, unmanned platforms, and command centers, enhancing situational awareness and coordinated response.
Designed as a scalable and interoperable architecture, the network will integrate AI-driven analytics and autonomous systems for next-generation defense communications.
The partnership builds on previous Nokia–LMT 5G trials at Ādaži military base in Latvia, where a portable tactical network using Nokia’s Banshee radio platform demonstrated robust field performance.
Nokia continues to expand its defense communications footprint across Europe and North America. Recent initiatives include joint projects with Motorola Solutions to field a containerized 5G network for UK defense forces and with Rheinmetall to build a next-generation battlefield network for Germany. Nokia has also collaborated with Lockheed Martin and Verizon to integrate commercial 5G technologies into Lockheed’s 5G.MIL Hybrid Base Station, supporting multi-domain secure operations.
