MUTANT XL blends MBDA’s missile expertise with Delair’s unmanned systems know-how, delivering a man-in-the-loop precision strike solution with enhanced maneuverability and mission flexibility for modern battlefields.

A new generation of loitering munitions is emerging through the collaboration of the two French companies. MUTANT XL integrates cutting-edge missile technology with advanced drone controls, enabling precise, adaptable engagements.

Designed around a man-in-the-loop framework, it allows operators to oversee every phase of the mission—from launch to final impact. MBDA says the system leverages its proven AKERON missile technology, offering reliable anti-armor and anti-infrastructure performance, even in harsh conditions.

Delair contributes its background in specialized defense platforms and commercial UAVs to enhance agility and adaptability. Together, the firms aim to position MUTANT XL as a scalable strike option for the French Armed Forces that can be tailored to diverse operational needs.

The system’s development is part of France’s Larinae program, which seeks to modernize ground-based weapons and unmanned combat capabilities. The initiative focuses on remotely controlled munitions designed to defeat armored targets at ranges up to 50 kilometers (31 miles), while also supporting broader national efforts in drone swarming, precision munitions, and long-range strike capabilities.

MUTANT XL was officially unveiled at the 2025 Defense Innovation Forum in Paris.
