Morocco has officially activated its Barak MX air and missile defense system, acquired from Israel in a 2022 defense agreement, Israeli media outlets have reported.
The system’s operational status was confirmed through satellite-based detection of electronic emissions, signaling its recent entry into service.
Produced by Israel Aerospace Industries, Barak MX provides multi-layered protection against a wide range of threats, including drones, manned aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, with engagement ranges extending to 150 kilometers.
Deliveries of system components began in 2023, enabling swift deployment supported by expanding security cooperation between Morocco and Israel.
Sources described the capability as a “desert Iron Dome,” highlighting its importance in reinforcing Morocco’s air defense posture, particularly across its southern territories and the Sahara region.
The timing of the activation coincides with growing regional concerns over the increasing use of unmanned systems and loitering munitions in modern conflicts.
Defense analysts have also pointed to risks posed by non-state actors such as the Polisario Front, which has previously demonstrated the use of drone technologies.
In parallel with military deployment, bilateral defense ties have moved into localized production. In November, Israeli firm BlueBird Aero Systems inaugurated a SpyX drone manufacturing facility in Benslimane—the first Israeli defense production site established in North Africa.
