Leonardo DRS and Hofmann Engineering have launched a joint effort to design and produce advanced naval propulsion technologies under the AUKUS framework, aiming to boost allied maritime capabilities and industrial integration. The partnership combines Leonardo DRS’s experience in electric and hybrid propulsion with Hofmann Engineering’s large-scale production facilities and engineering expertise in Western Australia. Together, they plan to research and develop systems for hybrid, electric, and conventional ship propulsion, addressing the increasing energy and power demands of future surface and underwater vessels. The collaboration supports AUKUS objectives to enhance interoperability and resilience across allied naval forces. Leonardo DRS brings proven systems from its work on the U.S. Navy’s Columbia-class submarines, while Hofmann provides precision manufacturing and local supply-chain infrastructure to expand Australian participation in advanced shipbuilding. The agreement also seeks to develop export potential by positioning Australia as a hub for naval propulsion innovation. In addition to defense applications, the technologies could contribute to commercial shipbuilding efficiency and sustainability. Both companies describe the partnership as a model of cross-alliance cooperation, combining technological innovation with workforce development and industrial self-sufficiency. By focusing on power efficiency, durability, and reduced emissions, the initiative reflects a strategic commitment to future-ready propulsion solutions that meet both AUKUS and global maritime standards.
