The Japanese government has pitched an upgraded Mogami-class frigate for Australia’s future fleet, emphasizing its integration with American weapons to boost joint naval operations with the US and Japan.

Mitsubishi’s vessel is one of two finalists in Canberra’s AU$10 billion ($6.62 billion) general-purpose frigate competition, competing against Germany’s MEKO A-200 from Thyssenkrupp.

If chosen, the frigate will replace Australia’s Anzac-class warships and perform multi-role missions, including air defense and maritime escort. Three ships will be built abroad, with the remainder constructed domestically. A decision is anticipated by the end of 2025.
