Japan has officially rolled out its first mass-produced Armored Modular Vehicle (AMV), marking the start of efforts to replace the JGSDF’s decades-old Type-96 armored personnel carriers. The JGSDF Chief of Staff attended the rollout ceremony at Japan Steel Works’ Muroran Plant, which is licensed to produce the next-generation 8×8 armored vehicles from Finland’s Patria, chosen in 2022.
The first vehicle will be delivered to the force this fiscal year. In a statement, the JGSDF highlighted the platform’s high mobility, strong protective features, and ability to transport troops safely under threat. It is also expected to support future international peacekeeping operations.
The Patria AMV XP 8×8 was selected for domestic production, with an agreement signed in 2023 between Patria and Japan Steel Works. The initial unit was completed in Finland, while local assembly in Japan is scheduled to begin in September 2025.
The AMV XP is 8.1 meters long, 2.4 meters tall, and 2.8 meters wide, with a maximum payload of 15,000 kilograms and a combat weight of 32,000 kilograms. Capable of speeds above 100 kilometers per hour, it has an operational range of 800 to 1,000 kilometers. Its modular protection system defends against ballistic attacks, land mines, and IEDs.
