Spain-based defense company Indra Group has partnered with engineering consultancy Tresca to support the construction of a new drone production facility in León, reflecting the growing demand for unmanned systems across Europe.

The collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, brings Tresca into Indra’s international supply network and assigns the company a key role in providing engineering expertise for the facility. The site will be located at the Villadangos del Páramo industrial estate and is part of Indra’s broader strategy to scale up domestic manufacturing of defense technologies such as drones, air defense systems, and armored vehicles.

The facility will focus on the production of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and loitering munitions, which have become essential tools in modern conflicts. Once completed, the plant is expected to create approximately 200 jobs and enhance Spain’s defense manufacturing capabilities.

Tresca, which has more than 25 years of experience in engineering projects spanning industries such as automotive and energy, will help design and implement the infrastructure required for the facility. Indra said the project aligns with its strategy to build a distributed defense production network across Spain to accelerate the delivery of military technologies.

Growing European Drone Production

Indra’s initiative is part of a broader trend of expanding drone manufacturing across Europe. In November 2025, STARK opened a drone factory in Swindon, its first production site outside Germany, where it manufactures the Virtus loitering munition and other autonomous platforms.

In February 2026, Ukrspecsystems launched a drone production complex in eastern England, including facilities in Mildenhall and Elmsett, aimed at securing long-term surveillance drone supplies for Ukraine while strengthening defense ties with United Kingdom.

Elsewhere, Estonia’s Meridein Group announced plans in 2025 to establish a large-scale UAS production plant capable of manufacturing up to 2,000 drones per day, supporting the defense needs of the Baltic region.

In 2024, Summa Defence also revealed plans to build a drone manufacturing facility in Finland in partnership with Ukrainian firms, aimed at boosting industrial-scale drone production for both Ukraine and European defense markets.
