Indonesia and Australia are looking to strengthen defense ties by establishing new trilateral frameworks with Japan and Papua New Guinea, while also increasing intelligence-sharing cooperation.
The plan was disclosed by Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin after meetings with Richard Marles, according to Reuters.
This development follows a February 2026 security pact requiring both nations to consult each other in case of potential threats.
Marles noted that although the facility will remain under Indonesian control, it may be used for Australian military training activities.
Leaders also confirmed that personnel from countries including the Philippines, Australia, and Singapore will be able to access the Morotai site, along with another training facility under development in North Kalimantan in partnership with Singapore.
