India’s defense technology sector marked a milestone as Flying Wedge Defence and Aerospace, a Bengaluru-based startup, rolled out the nation’s first MALE-class autonomous combat drone.
The FWD Kaal Bhairava, powered by AI, can remain airborne for 30 hours and cover 3,000 km (1,864 miles). Built for surveillance, precision engagement, and swarm operations, it offers India an indigenous option in the high-end UAV segment.
The system integrates 80% locally manufactured parts, strengthening supply chain security while ensuring independence from foreign sanctions. Alongside, the company is creating a domestic MRO network to guarantee faster servicing, lower costs, and dependable access to spares.
In addition, Flying Wedge is diversifying its UAV portfolio with a 100 km-range loitering munition and an unmanned bomber under development, designed for operations up to 800 km (497 miles).
