The Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) in India is building advanced nuclear reactors rated at 200 MWe (megawatt electric) to enhance the underwater endurance of the country’s future submarines.
Employing enriched uranium as fuel, the pressurized light-water reactors are designed to sustain submarine operations for nearly ten years without refueling.
Intended for the S5-class ballistic missile submarines, which have a payload capacity of up to 16 missiles, the reactors can be reconfigured to provide continuous power during covert operations.
