Germany is moving ahead with a major digital modernization of its Army Combat Training Center, awarding Rheinmetall a €61 million ($70 million) contract to upgrade the facility for next-generation land warfare training. The overhaul begins in 2025 and will be fully integrated by early 2028, forming a critical component of the Bundeswehr’s shift toward data-driven, network-enabled military operations. The upgrade marks one of the most ambitious training infrastructure enhancements under Germany’s evolving defense policy.

The effort falls under the D-LBO (Digitalisation of Land-based Operations) program, which aims to create a seamless, digitally integrated battle management environment for the German Army. Upgrades include advanced radio systems, an expanded communications infrastructure, and the deployment of a 5G-enabled broadband network to improve data flow during high-tempo exercises. As part of the modernization, the center will incorporate Blackned’s Tactical Core system, strengthening its secure communications backbone and supporting real-time information exchange across platforms.

These enhancements will dramatically improve the Bundeswehr’s ability to track, evaluate, and refine training performance. Updated analysis software will absorb command data from Sitaware Frontline and Sitaware HQ, offering deeper insights into command structures, troop positioning, situational awareness, and unit communication efficiency. This will enable more realistic simulations of digital battlefield environments and more comprehensive after-action reviews tailored to modern combat demands.

Situated in the Altmark region of Saxony-Anhalt, the transformed center will serve as a central hub for multinational and NATO interoperability drills. Alongside the training center upgrade, Rheinmetall has also secured a separate long-term contract—valued at up to $3.2 billion—to deliver advanced soldier systems from 2025 onward, reinforcing Germany’s commitment to building a fully digital, future-ready fighting force.
