Sisu Auto and Valmet Automotive have signed a cooperation agreement that will see Valmet’s Uusikaupunki factory repurposed to support Finland’s expanding military vehicle manufacturing efforts.
The Uusikaupunki facility, situated in southwestern Finland, has traditionally been associated with the production of high-end and sports cars, as well as roof systems and kinematic components. Its past customers include global automotive brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Opel, Saab, and Fisker.
Under the agreement, the plant will assemble vehicles from Sisu’s GT series, including the GTP 4×4 tactical vehicle and the GTT all-terrain platform. The GTP is a mine-resistant armored personnel carrier built for rugged operational conditions, while the GTT offers a flexible, multi-mission design supporting roles ranging from troop transport and command operations to artillery support and medical evacuation.
The expanded defense production is expected to deliver a substantial boost to local employment, with the ability to produce up to 300 vehicles annually and the potential to create more than 300 new jobs each year.
This initiative follows Valmet’s recent partnership with Finnish defense company Patria, announced in early December, to build Patria’s Protected Mobility vehicles at Uusikaupunki, with development activities set to commence in 2026.
