At its Muggiano facility in La Spezia, Fincantieri has laid the keel of the first U212 Near Future Submarine (NFS) destined for the Italian Navy. The ceremony represents a key step in a program initiated in 2018 to replace Italy’s long-serving Sauro-class diesel-electric submarines. Work on the lead vessel commenced in 2022, with entry into service planned for 2029 under the hull number “NFS1 S530.” The Italian Navy intends to procure four submarines under the program, with deliveries concluding by 2032.

Designed as a modern attack platform, the U212 NFS will carry cruise missiles for land strikes, heavyweight torpedoes, and unmanned underwater systems. It will be fitted with advanced sensors, enhanced communications and electronic warfare capabilities, and improved automated control systems. The submarine will measure 59 meters in length and 7 meters across, featuring a two-level internal layout to support a crew of over 30 sailors. Its propulsion architecture will integrate lithium battery technology with an MTU 16V-396 diesel generator, a Permasyn motor, and a quiet-running propeller to ensure stealth and endurance.
