Elbit Systems has secured a major $210-million contract to modernize Israel’s Merkava main battle tanks, marking one of the most extensive upgrade programs the fleet has seen in recent years. Spread across six years, the initiative will replace outdated electronic assemblies and integrate advanced onboard technologies aimed at boosting the tanks’ survivability, lethality, and situational awareness on the modern battlefield.
A major focus of the modernization involves enhancing threat detection and engagement capabilities. Elbit will equip the Merkava fleet with AI-powered electro-optical sighting systems that offer 360-degree day and night visibility, alongside improved target detection, tracking, and fire-control aids. The contract also includes long-term logistics support, spare parts, and maintenance services, ensuring high availability for operational formations.
First fielded in the late 1970s, the Merkava has evolved across several generations and remains the backbone of the Israel Defense Forces’ armored corps. Known for its crew-first design, reinforced armor, and front-mounted engine, the platform is optimized for both urban combat and open-terrain warfare. The latest upgrades will significantly strengthen its effectiveness in environments dominated by drones, electronic warfare threats, and reduced visibility.
The modernization aligns with Israel’s wider push to enhance armored force readiness amid growing regional challenges. In mid-2025, the government approved a $1.5-billion expansion program to accelerate production of tanks, armored vehicles, and support systems. Additionally, the Ministry of Defense awarded $155 million to a Rafael-Elbit partnership to scale up domestic manufacturing of advanced infrared sensors—technologies essential for ISR missions across drones, aircraft, and space assets, and critical for maintaining tactical superiority.
