At its Rosyth facility in Scotland, Babcock International has reached two major benchmarks in the Type 31 Inspiration-class frigate program for the Royal Navy.
Steel was cut for HMS Bulldog, initiating construction of the fourth vessel in the five-ship series, while HMS Active completed assembly and became the second frigate to depart the shipyard ahead of launch.
The program employs a modular build strategy, enabling parallel installation of systems and equipment within hull blocks during assembly. It also relies on an extensive supplier network spanning the UK and overseas, including many SMEs.
Type 31 Program Developments
Designed to deliver versatile surface warfare capabilities, the five frigates will undertake roles such as maritime security, intelligence gathering, defensive operations, and humanitarian missions.
The recent milestones add to progress achieved in 2025, notably the rollout of HMS Venturer and the keel laying ceremony for HMS Formidable. The company further strengthened the program with an $84 million Capability Insertion Period contract focused on integrating and validating system enhancements.
Separately, Babcock entered into an agreement with BAE Systems Bofors to manage long-term support for the Mk3 and Mk4 naval gun systems fitted across the fleet.
