John Cockerill Defense of Belgium will transform 113 military vehicles into ambulances for Ukraine, extending its ongoing assistance as the war with Russia continues.
The initiative involves 11 BV-206 all-terrain vehicles from BAE Systems and 102 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U4000 trucks, to be overhauled and supplied to Kyiv, as reported by UNITED24.
The program builds on previous modernization projects for Ukraine, including upgrades to M113 armored carriers and BV-206s completed in 2023–2024.
Manufacturing and Timeline
Operating from Liège, Cockerill is collaborating with Mercedes-Benz and Lambert Group, responsible for critical components like transmissions and tires. While familiar with the BV-206 platform, this marks the company’s first modification of the Unimog.
The initial ambulance deliveries are expected by the end of 2025, with full completion targeted for early 2026.
Valued in the tens of millions of euros, the deal ensures continued operations and local employment at the Aubange site, as Cockerill seeks to expand its international defense footprint.
The firm, which earned $1.4 billion in 2024 revenue, is urging the Belgian government to streamline defense procurement to expedite equipment deliveries to Ukraine.
