General Dynamics Land Systems–UK (GDLS-UK) and Ricardo have partnered to design and develop new light mobility vehicles for the British Army under the Land Mobility Programme (LMP).
Their collaboration focuses on adapting the Ford Ranger Super Duty platform to meet military performance and durability requirements, including payload, mobility, and sustainment capabilities.
The project’s prototypes include both 4×4 and 6×6 configurations, maintaining the Ranger’s safety, drivetrain, and towing features while incorporating military-specific enhancements for protection, power, and off-road operation.
By leveraging the Ranger’s established commercial supply chain, safety record, and global logistics network, the effort aims to deliver a cost-effective yet rugged military platform. The initiative will also strengthen UK industrial participation, job creation, and supplier development.
Aligned with the UK’s Land Mobility Programme, the partnership supports the Army’s goal of replacing legacy fleets with a smaller number of modular, multi-role vehicles. The LMP covers categories such as Light Mobility, Light Protected Mobility, and Medium Protected Mobility, with the first fielded units anticipated before 2030.
This effort complements other modernization initiatives, including Project Atilla—converting retired Warrior infantry fighting vehicles into remote mine-clearing systems—and NP Aerospace’s ongoing contract to sustain the UK’s armored and utility vehicle fleets.
