The Austrian Armed Forces is preparing to deploy its first homegrown satellite, BEACONSAT, with a planned launch in early 2027 to improve the detection of signal jamming and ensure secure navigation for military forces.

Developed in partnership with Austrian space firm Gate Space, the satellite will gather electronic intelligence data capable of identifying interference threats in operational environments. According to Austria’s defense minister Klaudia Tanner, the system will support troops operating across land, sea, and air by safeguarding navigation systems against jamming.

Across Europe, several countries have recently strengthened their military space capabilities through new satellite programs.

In June 2025, the Netherlands selected Finnish satellite company ICEYE to deliver its first operational intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance satellite system, enhancing its defense forces’ space-based monitoring capabilities.

By October 2025, Spain launched its most advanced military communications satellite, SpainSat NG II, designed to provide secure, high-capacity communications for military operations.

A month later, German defense company Rheinmetall teamed up with ICEYE to create a joint satellite initiative focused on deploying Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites, expanding reconnaissance capabilities for European defense forces.

In December 2025, Portugal also announced plans to procure its first SAR satellite, a step aimed at strengthening its national intelligence and surveillance capabilities in space. 🚀
