Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration has awarded Saab a contract worth 1 billion Swedish krona ($104 million) for the production of a new missile launch system designed for the country’s Gripen fighter jets. The system will be compatible with both Gripen C/D and the advanced Gripen E variants, enhancing operational flexibility and air combat readiness. The order follows successful testing under an earlier development contract, paving the way for series production. Mounted beneath the aircraft’s pylons, the new launcher enables faster and more reliable communication between the aircraft and its air-to-air missiles or countermeasure pods. Saab stated that the system significantly improves data exchange, enabling better targeting precision and faster mission execution. The new launcher forms part of Sweden’s ongoing effort to modernize its air defense network and maintain the Gripen as a cutting-edge multirole fighter. Recent defense upgrades include the introduction of the RBS 70 NG man-portable air-defense system and the RBS 98 medium-range missile system, enhancing coverage against aerial threats such as drones and cruise missiles. Saab has also supported Sweden’s acquisition of GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft to boost airspace surveillance and situational awareness. The new launcher program underscores Sweden’s commitment to maintaining an advanced and adaptable fighter capability amid evolving defense requirements.
