Ashok Leyland Defence Systems has developed a new 4×4 Mine Protected Vehicle (MPV) designed to enhance both protection and mobility for security forces operating in high-threat zones. The vehicle is optimized for counter-insurgency and internal security roles and is reportedly intended for deployment with the Jammu and Kashmir Police in sensitive operational areas.

Combining durability with flexibility, the MPV is built to counter modern threats such as IEDs, landmines, and small arms fire. It features a high-mobility configuration powered by a 220–245 horsepower engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 80 km/h while carrying an approximate payload of 1.5 tons.

The vehicle is well-suited for challenging terrain, offering a gradeability of 25 degrees to navigate steep inclines often found in mountainous and semi-urban regions. With a seating capacity of 2 crew members plus 10 personnel, it is designed for troop transport, patrol operations, and rapid deployment scenarios.

Its protection system is engineered to meet NATO STANAG 4569 Level III standards, providing robust ballistic resistance against high-speed small arms threats. In addition, the vehicle incorporates advanced mine and blast protection features to shield occupants from explosive impacts.

The MPV can withstand explosions of up to 14 kg TNT beneath the hull and 21 kg TNT under the wheels, significantly enhancing survivability in mine or IED attacks. Certain configurations also provide protection against 10 kg TNT blasts, demonstrating a layered and adaptable protection design.

For improved operational awareness, the platform can be equipped with advanced surveillance systems, including a 360-degree PTZ camera and infrared-enabled front and rear cameras, enabling effective performance in low-visibility and night conditions.

This development supports India’s broader focus on strengthening internal security through indigenous defense manufacturing. Such vehicles play a crucial role in protecting personnel during convoy movements, area domination patrols, and counter-terrorism operations.
