Poland has signed a $3.8-billion contract with the United States to upgrade its 48 F-16 C/D Block 52 multi-role fighters to the advanced F-16V Block 72 standard.

The modernization program, scheduled between 2028 and 2038, will enhance aircraft systems including radar, communications, reconnaissance, ground infrastructure, simulators, and training tools.

Most of the work will be carried out domestically at Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze No. 2 in Bydgoszcz, in cooperation with Lockheed Martin. Two aircraft will undergo testing in the US, with the remainder upgraded in Poland.

The deal supports Warsaw’s larger defense modernization strategy in response to growing regional security concerns.

Poland originally acquired its F-16 C/D Block 52s between 2006 and 2008, replacing Soviet-era fighters to align with NATO standards. While still capable, the fleet requires upgrades to enhance integration with F-35 jets, Abrams tanks, and Apache helicopters.

This contract is considered part of Poland’s $7.3-billion F-16 Viper Midlife Upgrade approved by the US in October 2024, which also covers advanced radars, navigation, targeting, electronic warfare systems, and munitions such as AIM-9X Block II missiles.
