The US Navy has officially commissioned the 14th Freedom-class littoral combat ship, USS Nantucket (LCS 27), in Boston, Massachusetts. This followed the ship’s acceptance trials in 2022 and its delivery in July 2024. Construction began in 2017 by Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine as part of the Department of Defense’s effort to modernize its naval fleet. This vessel is the third to carry the name Nantucket, succeeding a Civil War-era coastal monitor and a gunboat from the early 1910s that was later converted into a maritime training platform.
