Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi has announced that Project-76, aimed at developing a new class of indigenous diesel-electric submarines, is currently in its early stages. This initiative represents a significant step toward India’s goal of achieving full self-reliance in submarine design and manufacturing, building on the progress made under Project-75 and Project-75I. The design process is already in motion, with the final design expected by 2028. Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approval is anticipated around 2033–34, after which construction is set to begin. Project-76 will be India’s first fully in-house submarine design, drawing on experience from prior technology collaborations and transfers. DRDO and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited are currently working on competing designs for Navy assessment.
