The U.S. State Department has approved a potential arms sale to the Government of Italy for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) and related support, with an estimated value of $211 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has submitted the required Congressional notification.
Italy’s request includes 30 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs, 40 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs, and 2 AIM-120C-7 guidance sections, along with spare parts, containers, training, system support, software, technical manuals, and U.S. government and contractor logistical assistance.
This sale supports U.S. strategic objectives by reinforcing Italy’s defense capabilities as a NATO member and a key partner in promoting regional security and political stability. The additional AMRAAMs will strengthen Italy’s ability to address modern aerial threats while supporting NATO interoperability. Italy’s current AMRAAM inventory ensures a smooth integration of the new missiles into its defense forces.
The proposed sale is not expected to disrupt the regional military balance. RTX Corporation, based in Tucson, Arizona, will be the primary contractor. No offset agreements are currently associated with this sale, and no additional U.S. personnel will be required for implementation.
The provided cost estimate represents the upper limit based on initial requests, with the final contract value to be confirmed during the procurement process.
