The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has officially commissioned its fourth Taigei-class diesel-electric submarine. Constructed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the JS Raigei (“thunder whale”) enters service three years after the lead vessel, JS Taigei (“big whale”), was commissioned in March 2022. Japan plans to have all eight submarines in the class operational by the 2030s.
