HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced construction has begun on the last of three next-generation Aegis destroyers, which are part of South Korea’s Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system. The third ship’s groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Ulsan headquarters, attended by representatives from DAPA, DTaQ, and the Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute. The destroyer is slated for delivery to the Republic of Korea Navy by late 2027. This new class will feature substantial upgrades over the Sejong the Great-class, with stronger missile interception and better anti-submarine warfare (ASW), enhancing South Korea’s naval defense.
