The US Navy has granted Charles River Analytics $1 million to create an AI-powered tool designed to identify enemy submarines by analyzing their magnetic signatures. Unlike conventional acoustic detection methods, the Guidance for Naval Enhancement of Tactical Operations (MAGNETO) tool leverages the distortion of the Earth’s magnetic field caused by submarines’ ferromagnetic materials. However, the company noted that magnetic detection alone is not enough for effective anti-submarine warfare.
