Canada has awarded contracts to domestic shipbuilders to initiate the construction of modern polar icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Vancouver Shipyards and Chantier Davie Canada Inc. will each build one vessel to replace the fleet’s aging heavy icebreakers, including the decades-old CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent. Vancouver Shipyards secured a 3.15-billion-Canadian-dollar ($2.1 billion) contract, while Chantier Davie was granted 3.25 billion Canadian dollars ($2.2 billion).
