In response to the lukewarm reception of the proposed BrahMos-2K hypersonic cruise missile, BrahMos Aerospace—working in partnership with Russia—is re-evaluating the missile’s technical specifications and pricing model. Concerns raised over the high development and unit costs have led both countries to initiate discussions aimed at refining the design to enhance performance while achieving greater cost-efficiency.
The BrahMos-2K was envisioned as an Indian adaptation of Russia’s 3M22 Zircon, a scramjet-powered hypersonic missile. It was initially designed to reach speeds of Mach 6 and cover distances of 800–900 kilometers. Intended for use in conventional warfare, the BrahMos-2K was not designed to carry nuclear warheads, but rather to serve as a next-generation offensive weapon within India’s conventional arsenal.
