India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in partnership with the Indian Navy, has successfully test-fired an indigenously developed underwater sea mine. The weapon, known as the Multi-Influence Ground Mine, is engineered to strengthen naval defenses against advanced stealth submarines and warships.
Equipped with sensors capable of detecting acoustic, magnetic, pressure, and underwater electric potential or extremely low-frequency electric field signatures emitted by vessels, the mine enhances underwater threat detection.
Weighing 1,000 kilograms (2,205 pounds) and powered by a lithium-thionyl chloride battery, the mine is deployable from multiple platforms, including naval ships, submarines, and coastal surveillance stations.
The system was developed by DRDO’s Naval Science & Technological Laboratory in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory. Bharat Dynamics Limited and Apollo Microsystems Limited are responsible for production.
