The Somali National Army has graduated approximately 3,000 soldiers following an extensive training program at the Xananbuure camp in Galgadud. The graduation represents one of the largest military training events in Somalia since the collapse of the country’s central government in 1991.The recruits were drawn from different federal member states and completed nearly a year of military instruction. Their training covered basic battlefield tactics, discipline, military law, weapons handling, and other fundamental skills required for service in the national armed forces.Instructors from Ukraine, Romania, and Sudan participated in delivering the program. The training was supported by Saudi Arabia under an initiative that followed a February agreement to train as many as 5,000 Somali personnel. The graduation ceremony was attended by senior Somali federal and regional officials, along with representatives of the Saudi military establishment involved in overseeing elements of the program. The scale of the training effort highlights Somalia’s continued attempts to strengthen its national security institutions and develop a larger, professionally trained military force. Building capable national forces remains an important element of efforts to improve security and reduce reliance on external military assistance. The international involvement also demonstrates the continuing role of foreign partners in supporting Somalia’s military development. Training assistance from multiple countries provides Somali personnel with exposure to different approaches to military organization, discipline, and operational preparation. The newly graduated personnel are expected to contribute to the expansion of Somalia’s national military capacity. The program also forms part of a broader effort to develop sustainable security institutions capable of assuming greater responsibility for national defense.
