In a strategic decision, Thailand has chosen Sweden’s Gripen E/F fighter jets over the U.S.-built F-16s, announcing a $500 million deal to buy four jets as part of its plan to overhaul its combat air fleet.

The Royal Thai Air Force will replace its decades-old F-16 A/B aircraft, and this deal represents the first phase of a larger, 12-aircraft acquisition strategy spread across 10 years. Air Force officials cited defense readiness and operational compatibility as key selection factors.

The plan will be submitted for cabinet approval in July, with finalization anticipated by the end of August. A government committee recommended the Gripen following a 10-month assessment comparing both platforms.
