Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has confirmed a major expansion of its artillery modernization efforts, approving the purchase of 168 M109A7 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers from the U.S.—a significant increase from the originally planned 40 units. The procurement also includes an unspecified number of M992A3 field artillery ammunition supply vehicles, which share the M109A7’s upgraded chassis, improving operational synergy and battlefield logistics. Valued at over NT$90 billion (approx. $2.75 billion USD), the deal marks one of Taiwan’s largest investments in ground combat capability. Developed under the U.S. Army’s Paladin Integrated Management (PIM) program, the M109A7 features enhanced mobility, digital fire control, improved power systems, and stronger crew protection, giving the Republic of China Army a formidable edge in high-threat scenarios. Its integration with modern artillery networks and automated logistics will significantly boost Taiwan’s sustained fire support capacity.
