During the 55th edition of the Paris Air Show, Embraer announced that the Portuguese State plans to purchase a sixth KC-390 Millennium aircraft, expanding its existing order from five to six. This acquisition will enhance the Portuguese Air Force’s (FAP) transport capabilities and further support both defense and public interest missions.
Embraer and the Portuguese Air Force also intend to add ten purchase options to the contract, aimed at enabling potential future sales to other European nations or NATO allies via government-to-government agreements. This strategy is expected to improve collaboration among KC-390 operators, drive down operational and training costs, and encourage the continued growth of Portugal’s aerospace industry.
The KC-390 Millennium is a versatile, multi-mission aircraft capable of performing a broad range of operations, including cargo and troop airlift, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, disaster response, aerial firefighting, and aerial refueling. It can also conduct maritime patrol missions, thanks to its ability to extend range through in-flight refueling. Its capability to take off and land on short and semi-prepared runways makes it particularly valuable for Portugal’s defense needs.
With a proven 99% mission success rate and low operating expenses, the KC-390 Millennium offers built-in multi-mission functionality and seamless interoperability, making it an essential platform for modern air forces.
