Japan has contracted Kawasaki Heavy Industries to manufacture 17 CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopters for its armed forces. The agreement includes a 71.4 billion yen ($458.1 million) investment for five CH-47J helicopters, a version customized for Japan, and 161.1 billion yen ($1 billion) for 12 CH-47JA extended-range variants.
