Japan is currently in discussions with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) regarding the potential procurement of the K-RACER unmanned aerial vehicle to enhance military logistics capabilities.
According to a KHI spokesperson, interest from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) and the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency was sparked following a successful 2024 demonstration, during which the drone autonomously conducted cargo loading and unloading.
The rotorcraft-style K-RACER is capable of transporting up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of payload at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters (9,842 feet), making it well-suited for deployment in Japan’s mountainous terrain. It is powered by a 998cc Kawasaki Ninja H2R four-cylinder engine, typically found in high-performance motorcycles.
The aircraft also features a seven-meter (23-foot) frame with a collapsible tail, enabling transport in standard 20- or 40-foot shipping containers.
