Rheinmetall Landsysteme will deliver an additional 14 Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks (MBTs) to the Czech Republic by the end of 2026, as confirmed by a contract announced by the Czech Ministry of Defence on December 3, 2024. Valued at approximately CZK 4 billion (roughly EUR 160 million), the agreement includes the refurbishment and partial customization of the MBTs to meet Czech operational requirements. Some of these tanks may come from the Swiss Army’s inventory, which the Czech Republic expressed interest in acquiring in 2023. Rheinmetall had previously been selected to procure 25 Leopard 2 A4s from Switzerland, with deliveries completed in early 2024.
This procurement aligns with the Czech Republic’s broader modernization strategy, aimed at phasing out legacy Russian-made MBTs and replacing them with used Leopard 2 A4s, supported by German government funding. Since 2023, a total of 28 Leopard 2 A4s and two Büffel 3 armored recovery vehicles have been slated for delivery by 2024, with around half already received. With this new order, the Czech Leopard 2 A4 fleet is expected to grow to 42 units by 2026.
