Bulgaria is evaluating the acquisition of the French-made Caesar 155mm self-propelled howitzer to replace its aging Soviet-era 2S1 “Gvozdika” 122mm artillery systems. The Caesar is one of two defense proposals under consideration through the European Defence Industry Reinforcement through common Procurement Act (EDIRPA), the other being the IRIS-T air defense system. EDIRPA supports EU nations in jointly purchasing defense equipment, offering partial financial reimbursement.
