BAE Systems has entered into a research and development partnership with the US Army to advance the 52-caliber variant of the M109 self-propelled howitzer prototype.
Through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM-AC), BAE will expedite the system’s development.
The M109-52 upgrades the current M109A7 by integrating Rheinmetall’s L52 155mm, 52-caliber cannon.
This initiative follows the cancellation of the Army’s Extended Range Cannon Artillery program, which intended to deploy a 58-caliber cannon but was halted due to excessive barrel wear. The M109-52 is now being considered as a promising solution for the Army’s long-range precision fire needs.
