Australia will invest 2.12 billion Australian dollars (USD 1.39 billion) to acquire the latest variants of AMRAAM missiles, enhancing both its air defense and strike capabilities.
This move follows the US State Department’s approval in April to sell up to 200 AIM-120C and 200 AIM-120D missiles to Australia.
The AIM-120D-3 variant will be integrated into the Royal Australian Air Force’s F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and F-35A Lightning II fleets, while the AIM-120C-8 is designated for the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS).
The Australian Army’s new 10th Brigade is set to operate NASAMS, strengthening short-to-medium-range air defense. All missiles will be procured through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.
