FN America has secured a $4.9 million contract to supply its M240L lightweight medium machine guns to the US Army. The order builds upon the weapon’s original adoption in 2010, aimed at providing soldiers with a lighter yet durable firearm. The M240L offers an 18% weight reduction compared to the earlier M240B model while preserving its range and firepower. Utilizing a titanium structure, the M240L is approximately 5 pounds (2.2 kilograms) lighter than its predecessor. The weapon’s design is based on the FN MAG 58, a general-purpose machine gun that has served with the US military since the 1970s and forms the foundation of the M240 machine gun series.
